Church Update
May 6, 2026
Dear Church of the Open Bible,
Life can be dark. There’s bad news, whether personal and health-related or global and war-related. There’s also hostility and brokenness in our relationships, whether anger, resentment, or even apathy. And then there’s loss, exemplified in the grief of losing a close brother like Bill Bos last week. In our Sexuality 101 course on Sunday nights, we’re exploring pervasive brokenness in that area of our lives, and it has been heavy. Combined, all of these can make life feel like a thick darkness.
“Why such cheery thoughts for a beautiful spring afternoon?” you might ask. Well, because of the need for honesty, but then also, the hope we find in God’s word. In Psalm 112, the psalmist describes what characterizes one who trusts the Lord. Look at verse 4.
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. - Psalm 112:4
Our ability to show grace, mercy, and be righteousness comes to us from God through His Son, Jesus Christ. As we trust God in the dark, we begin to see light dawn in our lives. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t the darkness of sin or brokenness, but that it’s less heavy and suffocating. By God’s grace, when we come to Him, His light allows us to see our way and gives us hope of one day living in the clean brilliance of His presence.
Let us pray for the dawning of God’s light in the darkness of our lives and the lives of others.
In Christ,
Pastor Jeremy
