Dear Church of the Open Bible,
I’m watching about a few dozen gophers out my office window right now, scouring around and fighting over whatever bits of food they can find. I’d never say this to their face, but judging by their girth, I’m sure they are finding enough to eat.
Things come to life in the spring and, when I take a moment to watch, it’s amazing to see the diversity of God’s creation, from gophers to birds, from ants to deer. This leads me to wonder at how God knows and sustains His vast creation.
The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing. - Psalm 145:15-16
This is God’s goodness and mercy over all that He has made (v. 9), every living thing. And as amazing as that is for finite creatures like us, the author of the psalm then moves us to consider something even more incredible.
The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them. - Psalm 145:18-19
These verses too, speak of satisfying or “fulfilling desire,” but not exactly like we see with God’s gophers. There is a nearness that God has to those creatures of Him who “call on Him” and “who fear Him.” God not only sustains those who trust in Him like the rest of creation, He hears and saves them. Take a moment to marvel and thank God for His unique nearness to us through Jesus Christ.
In Him,
Pastor Jeremy
