Dear Church of the Open Bible,

This past week, we were able to connect with our extended family for a number of days. I have two sisters, both married, with each husband currently pastoring in a local church. When you include my dad, our family holidays are like a small pastor's conference, though way more fun. While there is a lot to catch up on when it comes to growing families and ministry, the most important questions for us as adults have to do with the condition of our souls and hearts. I don’t want to over-spiritualize it, but checking in on what matters most amidst the challenges of life, is so important and not just for pastors. We see this in some of the final verses of Psalm 33, the passage Jonathan preached on last Sunday.

Our soul waits for the LORD;

  he is our help and our shield.

For our heart is glad in him,

  because we trust in his holy name.

- Psalm 33:20-21 -

Here we have the description of a soul and heart waiting with gladness on the Lord. How? Because they are trusting in Him as their help and shield. His steadfast love towards us in Jesus Christ gives us everlasting hope. How is your soul today? How is your heart? Ask a brother or sister this question today. May we endure with gladness, knowing the character and promises of the Lord. Come Lord Jesus!
