Dear Church of the Open Bible,
This is the season of scheduling. As summer gives way to fall, we find ourselves needing to make choices about how we’ll spend our time as various activities start up after a break. Even if you are retired, your schedule is likely affected by the schedule of your kids and grandkids. So what’s on your schedule? What takes priority? As believers, we’ve been given an activity that should get on our schedule and affect all our other activities.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. - Matthew 28:19-20
On the basis of Jesus’ authority as the Son of God, He commissions His disciples to make disciples. This is done by: 1) initiating disciples into repentance and submission to Jesus - baptism, and 2) growing in Christlikeness through obedience - teaching. But the main verb, the main action is to “make disciples.”
This is not just the mandate of the church. It is the mandate of every follower of Christ. So are you making and nurturing genuine disciples of Christ? Is it on your schedule for the fall? Can it be found within the activities you choose to be involved in? May we be intentional in our obedience to our Lord’s command to make disciples.
