Dear Church of the Open Bible,
Brittany and I keep with the stereotypes when it comes to what we like to watch. For most part, she enjoys romantic comedies and I enjoy a good action flick. I especially like a story where the bad guys get what is coming to them, usually by a super-talented, undercover agent. An important piece of gear for such characters are silencers, which allow them to administer justice without being discovered by the loud crack of their gun. But in reality, silencers are not very silent. They are more accurately known as “suppressors” since they suppress the blast of the gun, rather than silence it.
While we may struggle to suppress the light and sound from a gun, human beings are well-practiced at suppressing something far more important. Paul uses this image in Romans 1:18.
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
Since the Fall, humanity has sought to suppress the light and sound that comes from God Himself. We suppress the truth about Him that is plainly seen in creation. Read over Romans 1:18-23 to get the context. Next week we’ll see that we go further than merely suppressing the truth but before then take some time for observation. Firstly, look for ways that we as a society at large suppress the truth about God as Creator. It shouldn’t take long to get a good list. Secondly, look for ways that you might suppress the truth about Him in your own life. How you might dampen and downplay who He is to those around you. Instead of suppressing, what we are called to do can be found in 1:21. May we do so this week!
